“Five weeks later, my life has completely changed! I can code”.

One day, while I searched for, ‘What you do to become a programmer in Uganda?’, I found a link pointing me to Outbox. I was familiar with Outbox because I previously attended a Google Developer Group event, but I did not know they taught code.

I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Kyambogo University over 7 years ago. Finding a job was quite hard because there was not much I could do with the skills I’d gained.

Currently, I am a teacher of Computer literacy at a Primary School in Nansana but I’ve always wanted to be more than this. I have always dreamed of being a programmer. I tried self teaching but it was quite frustrating. I felt like I would learn better with people.

One day, while I searched for, ‘What you do to become a programmer in Uganda?’, I found a link pointing me to Outbox. I was familiar with Outbox because I previously attended a Google Developer Group event, but I did not know they taught code.

I applied for Outbox EDU and here I am! Five weeks later; my life has completely changed! I can code. I can build a fully functional website and app. I believe this is the momentum I needed to set rolling on my career dreams.

I’d like to share with you some of the benefits I gained from taking this class;

I started building my portfolio
The program was designed to help us develop our skills through experiential learning.
Every week, we were given a project to do in line with the week’s learning. At the end of the programme, my team members and I built a web application which I can present as work I’ve done in my portfolio. Since I learnt the basics, I will continue building on the knowledge I gained as well as work on more projects.

I launched my career in programming
Every week throughout the five weeks, we received expert advice from an industry practitioner on how to prepare for the marketplace and the qualities employers look out for.
