Outbox and Moringa School - Nairobi will hold the second class of the Outbox EDU Moringa Prep Programme starting 12th November 2018 after a successful first cohort held between 11th June - 13th July 2018.

Outbox EDU Moringa Prep Programme is a full time introduction to Programming course held in partnership with Moringa School, a Software developer accelerator based in Nairobi- Kenya. The programme runs for five weeks; Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 6:00pm at the Outbox Innovation Hub in Kampala, Lumumba Avenue.

With access to advanced technology and a range of quality education materials, one would imagine that the thousands of graduates passed out by higher institutions of learning every year are skilled enough to be absorbed into the job market. However, the opposite is true since employers continue to complain about the raw skill exhibited by majority of the graduates employed.

According to the finance ministry, about 700,000 graduates enter the labor market every year and it is projected to increase to over 1.5 million by 2040.  Even then, only 90,000 manage to get job placements due because of lack of skills.

As a social business that values sustainability and solving real market problems, together with Moringa Schools, we thought it was timely to introduce a course in Uganda that would train young people and equip them with skills that are not only tailored to fill the gaps in the job market but also empower them to startup their own ventures.

The programme is designed to train students holistically in such a way that at the end of the preparation course, they are able to build basic web pages and understand the basics of front-end development and programming.

The curriculum covers;

  • HTML and CSS: web presentation and styling languages

  • Git: the tool programmers use to track code

  • Command line: the tool programmers use to interact with their computers

  • Markdown: a simple language for documents

  • JavaScript: a web programming language

  • Jquery: a JavaScript library for making interactive web pages

  • Bootstrap: a framework for easily creating user-friendly websites

Unique to this course is that anyone can apply with or without a tech background. Participants in the previous programme all came from various backgrounds ranging from students of law,public health, business computing and a firefighter; just to mention.

Faith Orone, an Alumni says, “we were able to learn a lot in the shortest period. The weekly evaluations really helped us sharpen our skill and improve the quality of our output.”

Participation in the programme only requires that the applicant is computer literate, passionate, has a tech mindset and  desires to pursue a career in technology. Learning is facilitated through project based assignments, pair programming and peer assessments.

The second edition will run from 12th November to 14th December and will be facilitated by a technical mentor from Moringa School.

Participants should register via http://bit.ly/2Ro09NQ before 28th October 2018 and are required to have a personal laptop.
