About the Event
Introduction
R is an open source programming language for statistical computing, data analysis, and graphical visualization ( http://www.r-project.org/ ). R has a very huge user community worldwide, and its user base is growing exponentially. While most commonly used within academia, in fields such as computational biology and applied statistics, it is gaining currency in commercial areas such as quantitative finance and business intelligence.
Kampala R is the local User group of R. Our goal is to support and share R experiences and knowledge among its users in the Ugandan community. Kampala R user group is supported by Outbox: a local tech hub in Kampala.
The local user group meets once every month. Each session has consists of a tech talk, and a simple demonstration of R features or tools.
To end the year, this month’s R meetup will host Chris Lwanga, Senior Director Software Partnerships at Microsoft. Chris will be sharing on Microsoft’s Azure Cloud service for startups, and the various services it offers that utilise R that can be utilised by startups in the development of data driven products. Mark Okello will thereafter do a demonstration on importing and cleaning big data using Microsoft Machine Learning Server

About the speakers
Chris Lwanga
Mr. Lwanga heads the team that works with over 1200 startups and ISV partners in the Cloud and Enterprise Division – ISVs that innovate on Azure, SQL Server, Windows Server, System Center. Prior to joining Cloud+Enterprise he was a Director in Microsoft's Unlimited Potential Group (UPG), where he was tasked with delivering mobile solutions to partners in emerging markets; in this capacity he also served on the board of Oxigen Services in India and also handled another major partnership in sub- Saharan Africa with the Blue-Label investment group. Before joining UPG he was focused on delivering Windows Mobile solutions to 125 Mobile Operators around the world for Microsoft's Windows Phone Business. Mr. Lwanga has over 20 years of experience primarily in the Government, Communications and Media & Entertainment verticals. He holds an MBA in International Management from the University of Dallas, a BS in Computer Engineering and a BS in Business Administration from LeTourneau University.
Mark Okello
Mr. Mark Okello is the Current Lead for Kampala R user group, He remotely works for a Canadian Company called Roots as a Data Scientist, Locally he works with different consultancy firms MSE Consultants, EDICAS ltd, Info World Int and Cognitive AI Uganda where he has built data products for Organizations (The World Bank group, Mildmay). He also contributes to different studies/projects at Infectious Disease Institute and The Medical concierge group. Mark is a computer science graduate from Makerere University and Statistical Learning from Stanford University and loves to share knowledge.
