Well, am both a statisticians and computer scientist with bachelors in both fields, I would simply say it is a good initiative because during my stat course i didn't get the opportunity to use R until recently when I was doing the free online data analysis course at http://coursera.org - You want to try it. I have worked with a statistics department in one of the ministries where statistics / data analysis is very critical in government planning, but none of the statisticians would welcome the Idea of using R simply because they have never heard of it and so are reluctant on adapting it. So I think students should be taught R and not limited to other statistical packages coz i personally find it better.... I wounder how this can be done though... Good JOB thumbs up
