Girls in ICT Day

#GirlsInICT

This is an initiative by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that started off in 2010. It is celebrated in over 100 countries on every 4th Thursday of April, each country holding events hosted by different groups. The official Girls in ICT website say the campaign seeks to “create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of information and communication technologies (ICTs)”.

In a video by the ITU Secretary General, he encourages Girls in ICT all over the world to view technology as an exciting story and career choice. He also brings to mind four ladies who qualified among the winners of the last year’s ITU Young Innovators Competition.

A few years ago, it was obvious that girls had little or no interest Technological courses and jobs, but now, it is so evident that the girl child has risen up and are taking up ICT courses and filling up ICT jobs not only in Uganda but all over Africa.

GirlGeekKampala, a community encouraging the programming culture in Girls and Women, is holding events towards the same cause. Tomorrow there will be Ruby Friday here at the Outbox for all Girl Geeks and there will be a Hangout on Saturday 27th with AkiraChixa group of African ladies the “aims to inspire and develop a successful force of women in Technology that will change Africa’s future”.
