The Intel Ideation Camp - What Transpired

From 10th to 12th September 2014, Outbox hosted a team of support trainers from Intel East Africa Abigael Wangui and Mark Kamau also working at iHub Nairobi Kenya, for a Training of Trainers (TOT) and a two day workshop, The Intel Ideation camp.

The Intel Ideation camp is a 2 day long workshops in which participants go through the learning process to ideate, innovate and imagine solutions to identified problems.

This course is suitable for anyone who is interested in developing an entrepreneurial mindset.

Training of trainers (TOT)

On 10th September, 2014, a team of 10 members underwent an intensive Ideation process in order to help the community in Uganda go through future Intel Ideation Camp that would be organized by Outbox through the partnership between Outbox and Intel.

The team started applying the skills they acquired immediately in the first Intel Ideation Camp, working hand in hand with the Intel team as mentors to guide the participants on the following day through the ideation process.

The Intel Ideation Camp

Day 1 - Discovery

The Intel Ideation Camp brought together 53 participants including the 10 trainers and mentors for the event.

On the first day, 11th September 2014, the participants were taken through the following processes and activities;

The participants were introduced to the concepts of ideation, innovation and imagining solutions to identified problems after which, six groups were formed with each group comprising of a Hustler (Business person), a Hacker (Developer) and an Artist (Designer).

These groups went through the following processes:

  1. Studying the challenge and understanding the user’s main problem
  2. Doing technology research
  3. Ideation and coming up with a great idea.

Day 2 - Creation

On the second day, the six teams came back to work and send off their great ideas before the panel of Judges. In preparation, the Intel team took the teams through pitching, the dos and don’ts while pitching in order to help them gain confidence before the final session.

The teams then worked on finding a sustainable business model, building a prototype and finally pitching their ideas to the jury.

Learning Outcome

At the end of the training the participants were able to learn the following;

  • Identify business opportunities where others see problems
  • Understand social challenges and understand the context
  • Screen new technologies and understand how they can be applied to solve a problem
  • Use creative tools and techniques to generate great ideas
  • Build new innovative business models
  • Make rapid prototype and use visual communication to create a great presentation of the idea.

The first Intel Ideation Camp in Uganda was a build-up to Garage48 Kampala 2014, an event where participants turn an idea into a working prototype in 48 hours.

This Ideation Camp marked the beginning of engagements in an agreement signed between Outbox and Intel East Africa to support similar Ideation Camps that would be conducted by Outbox.

"The trick we used as a winning team was to make everyone in our team try to pitch the idea to an investor in less than 3 minutes as we practiced, we then picked amongst ourselves the person who pitched a given concept best to be the one to talk about it during the presentation. Remembers Investors like to invest in a story behind the idea so you have to believe in your idea and don’t forget to show them the money."
