Uganda wins Random Hacks of Kindness East Africa 2013

Last weekend, October 5th - 6th 2013, 13 software developers came together at Outbox to participate in the Random Hacks of Kindness (RHOK) East Africa.The hackathon also had participants from Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania.RHOK brings together software developers to build solutions that solve a number of social problems. Team ATAPs won the national RHOK event in Kampala and later on went to win the regional East Africa event.The focus was on "Resilience building Innovations" with thematic areas ranging from Agriculture, Water and Sanitation, health, and Disaster risk reduction.The participants in Uganda were split into three teams working on the following:a) Lyma; a mobile platform to enable farmers determine the appropriate soil types for crops they intend to plant by providing them with on-demand information on land use. The objective of this solution was to reduce land degradationb) ATAPS: a mobile application that promotes adherence to antenatal and postnatal services by providing expecting mothers with health tips and advice through SMSc) S3D (Stop the 3 delays): A mobile application to enable expecing mothers find the nearest health center in their area by providing information through SMS on the nearest health center with functional maternal services.At the end of the hackathon, team ATAPS emerged winner of the competition with Lyma as second runner-up and S3D the 3rd runner up.Participants in these teams included;ATAPSA) Remo Samuel Paul b) James Murangac) Caesar MukamaLymaa) Deogratius Afimanib) Bonita Nanziric) Mohammed Sempebwad) Edward Ssemuwembae) Michael MaleS3Da) Olel Danielb) Loyang LennyMentors at RHOK Kampala were from Resilient Africa Network at Makerere University (RAN) and The Medical Team Concierge.Mentors included;a) Ibrahim Lutalo; Monitoring and Evaluation Manager, RANb) Ali Halage; RAN, School of Public Health, Makerere Universityc) Yazidhi Bamutaze; RAN, Department of Geography, Makerere Universityd) Christine Nalwadda; RAN, School of Public Health, Makerere Universitye) Deborah Naatujuna; College of Computing and information Sciences, Makerere Universityf) Dr. John Mark Bwanika, The Medical team ConciergeThe winning teams are going to be offered further support to bring their ideas to market.RHOK
