Up Accelerate

Up Accelerate is a one-year initiative implemented by Outbox in partnership with UNFPA and funding from UKAID. It seeks to support young entrepreneurs aged 18 - 30 years that are tackling challenges in sexual and reproductive health in Uganda by providing them with mentorship, seed funding of up-to $10,000 per team, business development training and technical guidance.

The Up Accelerate initiative has been developed with support from the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, aligns with national priorities, and contributes to Vision 2040.

The Up Accelerate program was launched in November 2016 and runs until October 2017.

She is passionate about using technology to improve Uganda’s health sector, with a special interest in Mental Health.

With a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Advanced Certificate in Applied ICT Health from the International Health Sciences University Uganda (IHSU), his career has been running on three separate but closely related tracks: Desktop and Mobile Applications Development, Database Development and Entrepreneurship and Business Development.

Aidah Bukubuza is a co-founder and Marketing coordinator at DIGI health limited where she focuses on empowering youth the use of evolving ICT for health, Business and Advocacy. Aidah is holds a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology from Makerere University Uganda (MUK) and an Advanced Postgraduate Certificate in Applied ICT Health from International Health Sciences University Uganda (IHSU) where she focused on systems and marketing for using the evolving technology for education, entrepreneurship and health awareness. She has over 6 years of experience in Information Technology Systems and IT Marketing. She is also a co-founder at Bernice Women Uganda and works as project and community coordinator and Young Women Advisory Panel (YWAP) Akina Mama wa Afrika both organisations advocate for rights against violence among women and girls. She is tasked with empowering women voices using ICT tools and platforms for awareness. She is also Young African Leadership Alumnus (YALI).

Aidah has volunteered in health awareness program campaigns using technology platforms with Mulago National referral hospital Uganda marathon around mental health awareness, BBC Africa Focus and Uganda Reading for recovery Club to Butabika Mental Health Hospital Uganda. Aidah is passionate and committed to use technology systems and hopes to witness many young adults use ICT for health solutions and create awareness about domestic violence and mental Health.

Menyo Innocent is a co-founder and team leader of MOBILE SCAN SOLUTIONS UGANDA LIMITED. The Company is developing a low cost mobile ultrasound device to support obstetrics scanning in low resource settings. With a background of service above self through being a former president of Rotaract club of Mulago, Innocent is passionate about social impact especially in low resource areas, he has worked on other projects to include among others Nutrition for health, a programme that educates pregnant women how to feed well and attain valuable nutrients during pregnancy.  Innocent is also a co-founder  at T-Detect, an innovation that uses android based software that communicates with a sensor put on the buckle of the belt to monitor temperatures around the ‘manhoods’ so as to give warnings in case of unsafe temperatures that would result into impotence.

He has studied a Bachelors of Science in Medical Radiography at Makerere University Medical school, trained and acquired special skills in medical imaging including Ultrasound scanning and interpretation of ultrasound scans, Plain radiography- taking and interpretation of X-rays, CT scanning, MRI Scanning, special radiological procedures to include barium swallow, barium meal, barium enema, Hysterosalpingography. He has also acquired special hands on training in Obstetrics and Gynecology ultrasound scanning at ECUREI, an institution under Jefferson University, UK.

Ahimbisibwe Prosper is a cofounder and chief of operations of mSCAN, a low cost mobile ultrasound probe innovation that detects the risk factors of maternal mortality among pregnant women in low resource settings. He has founded a Youth Organisation of Community and Occupational Health (YACOH) as a platform of young people to strive for a healthier Uganda. He later on served in the 81st  Student Guild as representative for the famous School of Medicine. His passion for research saw him serve as President of Research & Writers Club that saw the 48th Edition of Makerere Medical Journal was published. As a believer in community and social work, he is a member and outgoing Public Relations Director of the Rotaract Club of Mulago where he has engaged in various projects of charity and social justice. This propelled to an enrollment into the Young Leadership Forum Fellowship Cohort 2016-2017 by Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Uganda. He just completed a five years’ program of Bachelors of Medicine, Bachelors of Surgery and is awaiting his medical internship in October 2017 to 2018.

Asiimwe Lydia (MPAM, BED, DFM) is a co-founder at EcoSmart Uganda Limited, a social enterprise developing sanitary pads that will be affordable to girls and women from low income earning backgrounds in Africa. In her past experience, Lydia has worked with rural communities in Western Uganda aided by Compassion International and while there for 2 years, she spent time interacting with women and girls, listening to their challenges and supporting them to come up with innovative solutions to solve these challenges. It is from this experience that Lydia developed a passion and inspiration to start the Eco Smart Pads project.

Lydia is also an innovator working on 3 other health innovative solutions incubated under the CAMTech Uganda incubator; The award winning Nuway innovation to improve the safety of passengers on boda bodas, the award winning Vein locator to locate the veins of babies during IV and SaniDrop a locally made alcohol based hand sanitiser.

Lydia doubles as CAMTech Uganda’s Finance and administrative manager and has gained experience in grant fund management, coordinating programs, managing budgets, networking and providing vital daily services to support other innovators.

Julius is the managing director and co-founder of Medsols Uganda Limited a private limited company dealing with developing, buying, selling and leasing medical technologies.

He ideated project iDrain, a chest drainage device for use in low and middle income countries that was voted the second best innovation at the CAMTech Uganda Hack-a-thon 2016.

Julius is in his final year of study at Mbarara University of Science and Technology pursuing a Bachelor's’ degree in Pharmacy. He has done a number of research projects in the field of traditional medicine with the most recent being a herbal anti-anaemic regimen for use in HIV/AIDS patients.

She holds a Master of Business Administration from Edinburgh Business School, Herriot Watt University (UK). She is also a Certified Project Management Professional and a member of the Project Management Institute.

Mabel has expertise in Program and project management, Grants management, Project evaluation and impact assessment, Quality review management, and Business Plan development and advisory.

Previously a 3rd place winner at Start-Up Chile (one the world’s biggest and most diverse startup accelerators), WinSenga was one of only 10 startups showcasing at the 2016 World Health Summit.

Joshua has over 6-years’ experience building mobile and web solutions. He was awarded the 2014 the Future Africa Prize in Technology and is one of the youngest ever finalists for the Innovation Prize for Africa. He was also Silver Winner at the 2015 inaugural Oxford Africa Innovation Fair. Joshua graduated summa cum laude (Information Systems) from Makerere University.

After University he worked with JP Morgan Chase and Bank One Corporation before returning to Uganda. After returning to Uganda, Timothy worked for various companies in Uganda focusing on IT software consulting services. Timothy started a few IT consultancy companies which prepared him to start Laboremus Uganda Ltd with Norwegian investors, where he works today.
