GeekNight April 2016 - Designing Distributed Applications

Introduction

Large scale distributed systems are becoming paramount importance due to the evolution of technology and to the interest in the consumer or user market. The cloud and containerized microservices have lowered the barrier to entry and many startups have taken advantage of this to develop large applications. While this is the case, designing large scale applications requires the understanding of a wide range of risks that may rise because of scale, costs and design.

Join us on Tuesday 26th April 2016 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Outbox hub as we attempt to clarify and categorize the kind of challenges and find solutions associated with them.

What we shall cover?

We will look into considerations that you need to have before you design an application which is supposed to scale. This will be followed by a demo or code review of systems that have been designed with these considerations in mind.
We will have a question and answer section at the end.

We shall cover all this bearing in mind the African continent and resource limited settings.

Who should attend?

Any software developer with interest in large scale applications. The session will be a soup to nuts, and will cover introductory material to advanced level.

Outcomes

Attendees are expected to be able to:

 Identify properties of an application that may cause problems in scaling.
 Make better decisions on architectural design for applications that should handle high workloads
